Description:

This four-hour laboratory combines concise didactic instruction with extensive hands-on practice to develop practical skills in small animal arthrocentesis and intra-articular injection techniques. Using canine and feline specimens, participants will perform arthrocentesis of the shoulder, elbow, carpus, stifle, and tarsus under the guidance of two experienced instructors, including a board-certified small animal surgeon with practice limited to orthopedics.

The course will emphasize patient positioning, anatomic landmarks, needle placement, sample collection, and proper joint injection technique. Arthrocentesis of the hip joint will also be discussed and may be attempted; however, participants will learn why this procedure is most reliably performed with image guidance (radiography or ultrasonography), which is not included in this laboratory.

In addition to technical instruction, the course will review the indications for arthrocentesis and joint injection, as well as common pitfalls, potential risks, and possible complications. By the end of the laboratory, participants should have increased confidence and proficiency in performing arthrocentesis and joint injections of the major appendicular joints in dogs and cats.
