Karin Orsel

Dr. Karin Orsel is a Professor of Epidemiology on the veterinary faculty at the University of Calgary, Canada. She completed her DVM at Utrecht University (the Netherlands) in 1996 and worked as a locum veterinarian in several practices there before becoming a clinician at the ambulatory clinic of the Department of Farm Animal Health at Utrecht. After being actively involved in an epidemiologic study during an epidemic of foot and mouth disease in 2001, she started graduate training on this topic and obtained a MSc degree in veterinary epidemiology and economics and a PhD. Afterwards, she joined the faculty of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Calgary, with a focus on epidemiology and infectious diseases of cattle. She also passed her NAVLE, which allowed her to practice part time in Alberta for a beef consulting practice. Her research and teaching focuses on both beef and dairy cattle herd management, infectious diseases and welfare related topics like lameness and beef cattle preconditioning. A council member of the Canadian Veterinary Medical Association, she has recently taken on the role of Convenor of the One Health Initiative at the University of Calgary.
