Auburn University Raptor Center – Champions of Conservation
The Auburn University Raptor Center (AURC), a division of the College of Veterinary Medicine, is motivated by its mission of raptor rehabilitation, education and conservation. Over the past 50 years, the AURC has delivered the highest quality medical care and rehabilitation for wild raptors, supported conservation efforts, and enhanced public understanding of these magnificent birds.

Habitat loss is a major concern not only for bald eagles, but for the other animal and plant species that share their ecosystems. AURC is aware of the recent habitat loss in Auburn that resulted in removal of a bald eagle nest. After learning about the eagle nesting site, we had hoped that the nest could remain. USFWS oversees permits for activities involving migratory birds, including rehabilitation, special use, depredation, and “take” permits. AURC has no regulatory or permitting authority regarding eagles or any other species and has no participation or influence in the decision-making process by USFWS.
A study published this year in the Journal of Raptor Research by Wittig, et al, determined that established bald eagle pairs that built new nests were just as successful as pairs reusing nests. We are hopeful that these eagles will construct a new nest or use an alternate nest and successfully raise young this season. We hope that incidents like this will inspire our community to keep the conservation of our ecosystems at the forefront of their minds. If you have been inspired by these events to do more, please consider volunteering with a local group that participates in conservation and wildlife education efforts.
AURC is proud to be a rehabilitation center for all birds of prey from the state of Alabama. The center remains dedicated to assisting birds of prey that have been injured or orphaned for any reason.
