Boshell Research Day showcases range of diabetes research

Auburn University’s College of Veterinary Medicine will host the 17th Annual Boshell Diabetes and Metabolic Diseases Research Day on Friday, April 17, at the Auburn-Opelika Marriott Resort at Grand National.

Boshell Research Day

The annual Boshell Research Day event brings together experts from across the U.S. to present and discuss cutting-edge research on diabetes and the role of obesity in its development. The event features a full day of scientific presentations and discussion, showcasing advances from basic and clinical research.

“Here at Auburn, we are addressing metabolic diseases from every angle — from fundamental laboratory discoveries to a broad range of clinical studies,” said Robert Judd, director of the Boshell Research Program and professor of pharmacology in the Department of Anatomy, Physiology and Pharmacology within the CVM. “Boshell Research Day provides an exciting opportunity to convene researchers to exchange ideas and insights on diabetes, obesity and emerging therapeutic approaches.”

Primarily focusing on Type 2 diabetes, Boshell Research Day has grown from the brainchild of two College of Veterinary Medicine faculty members into a collaborative effort between 52 faculty members across 10 colleges and universities. Aiming to provide a gathering point for collaboration to better understand the relationships between areas of research, the event attracts students and researchers from kinesiology, cardiology, drug development and distribution, chemistry, engineering, and nursing.

This year’s keynote speaker is Dr. Jiandie Lin, Bradley M. Patten Collegiate Professor in the Life Sciences and professor of cell and developmental biology at the University of Michigan Medical School and Life Sciences Institute. Other speakers for the event include:

  • Clair Crewe, assistant professor of cell biology and physiology, Washington University in St. Louis, School of Medicine
  • David S. Ludwig, professor of pediatrics, Harvard Medical School, professor of nutrition, Harvard School of Public Health, and New York Times best-selling author of “Always Hungry? Conquer Cravings, Retain your Fat Cells and Lose Weight Permanently”

Registration and additional information, such as travel and accommodation, are available at aub.ie/BoshellResearchDay. The event is free for Boshell program members and $125 for non-members. Students and postdoctoral fellows may attend at no cost. Registration is open through April 10.
