Freya

Freya

Freya, a Eurasian Eagle Owl, was bred in human care specifically for ambassador work and joined the Auburn University Raptor Center in 2023. As a nonnative species, she offers a unique opportunity for visitors to learn about one of the world’s largest and most powerful owl species not found naturally in North America. Her being raised in human care makes her comfortable around people and well-suited for educational programs.

Eurasian Eagle Owls are known for their incredible size, striking orange eyes, and deep, resonant calls. In the wild, they inhabit a wide range of habitats across Europe and Asia, from rocky cliffs to dense forests. Their powerful talons and impressive wingspan make them top predators in their ecosystems, capable of taking a variety of prey. Freya helps us highlight these remarkable adaptations while also teaching audiences about the diversity of owl species worldwide.

Still early in her ambassador journey, Freya is building confidence and practicing new skills as part of her training. As she continues to grow, she will play an important role in our programs, helping visitors appreciate the beauty, strength, and global diversity of raptors.
