Juniper

Juniper

Juniper, an Eastern Screech Owl, arrived at the Auburn University Raptor Center in 2017 after being found with significant head trauma, likely the result of a collision with a vehicle. Although she received prompt medical care, the extent of her injuries left her unable to safely return to the wild. Instead, Juniper now serves as a small but mighty ambassador for her species.

Eastern Screech Owls are one of the most common owls in the Southeast, yet they often go unnoticed due to their excellent camouflage and quiet, trilling calls. Juniper helps us highlight their incredible adaptations, such as their ability to blend seamlessly into tree bark and their remarkable flexibility in nesting in forests, parks, and even backyard habitats. Her story also provides an opportunity to discuss the challenges these owls face, including vehicle collisions, habitat loss, and the dangers posed by human activity.

Despite her small size, Juniper makes a big impression during programs. Through her presence, guests learn just how important even the smallest raptors are to our ecosystems.
