Onyz

Onyx, a Verreaux’s Eagle, joined the Auburn University Raptor Center in 2023 after being captive bred specifically for ambassador work. Hatched the same year, he has grown up in human care and is becoming increasingly confident in his role as one of our most unique educational partners. As a nonnative species originating from the rocky cliffs and savannas of sub-Saharan Africa, Onyx offers visitors a rare opportunity to learn about a powerful eagle that few people ever encounter up close.
Verreaux’s Eagles, also known as Black Eagles, are renowned for their striking dark plumage, long wings, and exceptional hunting skills, particularly their specialization on rock hyraxes in their native range. Their agility and strength make them one of Africa’s most impressive raptors. Onyx helps us share these remarkable adaptations while also inspiring conversations about global raptor diversity and the importance of conserving habitats worldwide.
Still early in his ambassador journey, Onyx is developing new skills through training and positive interactions with his handlers. As he matures, he will become an even more prominent part of our programs, helping audiences explore the extraordinary world of eagles beyond North America. His presence enriches our educational mission and highlights the incredible variety of raptors that make up our planet’s ecosystems.
