Petey
Petey joined the Auburn University Raptor Center’s education team in 2010. He is a human imprint, meaning he was raised by people instead of adult Red-tailed Hawks. As a result, he does not view humans as a threat and often displays imprinting behaviors such as soliciting food or gathering sticks to build a “nest” while people are nearby. Because he lacks the survival instincts needed to live independently in the wild, Petey remains in human care as an educational ambassador.
As one of our most recognizable residents, Petey helps visitors learn about Red-tailed Hawks—one of North America’s most widespread and adaptable raptors. Known for their powerful build and distinctive brickred tail, these hawks play a vital ecological role by controlling rodent populations and supporting healthy ecosystems.
Petey is one of our most dependable flyers and regularly performs in our flight shows, often soaring directly over the audience and showcasing the strength and agility that Red-tailed Hawks are known for. His confident flight demonstrations give visitors a firsthand look at the remarkable adaptations that allow these hawks to thrive in the wild.
He weighs around 950 grams and boasts a wingspan of just over 3 feet, perfectly representing the impressive form of this well-known species. Through his engaging presence and reliability in programs, Petey continues to inspire visitors and foster a deeper understanding of Red-tailed Hawk conservation.
