Phantom

Phantom, a Barn Owl, joined the Auburn University Raptor Center in June 2020. He was captive bred in Missouri specifically for educational outreach, and because he is a human imprint, he is non-releasable and relies on people for care. His background allows him to serve as an excellent ambassador for his species and helps us share the importance of raptor conservation with the public.

Phantom is still a young Barn Owl, and much of his training focuses on building confidence and practicing flights in new environments. As he progresses, you will see him featured more often in our programs and presentations. True to his name, Phantom often makes his presence known vocally before he ever takes the stage—he is one of our more talkative residents and isn’t shy about sharing his thoughts.

He weighs approximately 450 grams and has a wingspan of about 3½ feet, showcasing the graceful design of this iconic nocturnal hunter.
