Pyro

Pyro, an Aplomado Falcon, joined the Auburn University Raptor Center in 2023 after being captive bred specifically for ambassador work. Unlike many of our native raptors, Aplomado Falcons are not naturally found in Alabama, they are native to the grasslands and open deserts of the American Southwest, Mexico, and parts of Central America. Pyro’s upbringing in human care makes him confident around people and well-suited for educational programs.
Aplomado Falcons are known for their sleek build, bold facial markings, and remarkable speed and agility. In the wild, they often hunt cooperatively in pairs, using impressive teamwork to flush and chase down prey. Their reliance on healthy grassland habitats makes them a key species in conversations about habitat restoration. Once nearly extirpated from the United States due to habitat loss, Aplomado Falcons have become a conservation success story in areas where they have been reintroduced.
As an ambassador, Pyro helps us highlight this conservation journey and the importance of protecting open habitats that support diverse wildlife. His striking appearance and energetic personality make him an instant favorite among guests, offering an up-close look at a falcon species many people never have the chance to see in the wild. Through Pyro, visitors gain a deeper appreciation for both the beauty of raptors and the value of ongoing conservation efforts.
