Maxwell earns 2026 El Toro Award for Excellence in Food Animal Science
Fifty years ago, Dr. Herris Maxwell `78 received a piece of mail from Auburn University that changed the course of his life. It was a letter informing him that he had been accepted into the College of Veterinary Medicine.

2026 Bailey Awards honor ‘turtles on fence’ for career exceptionalism
Turtles (order Testudines) are remarkable for several reasons, with shells formed from more than 50 fused bones, toothless beaks, and gender influenced by temperature of the nest during incubation. While holding their breath for incredibly long periods of time certainly qualifies as a superpower, turtles cannot fly and are not known for being climbers.

Wisdom meets work ethic: Vaughan mentee earns fitting award
Wherever Dr. Johnny Mac Smith practiced veterinary medicine, he carried the words of the late Dr. John Thomas Vaughan with him. From private practice to his co-founding of one of the nation’s largest equine hospitals, Smith’s office has always held a framed copy of a message Vaughan wrote in the yearbooks of the Auburn University DVM program’s Class of 1976.

Lost and Found: Retired veterinarian Nancy East ’97 found her purpose by finding others.
The alarm sounded on Nancy East’s cellphone calling for the volunteer Haywood County Search and Rescue team. The alert provided the basic information about the situation. Two college students from UNC Charlotte were lost in the Shining Rock Wilderness area.

Galloping to glory: Alumna takes veterinary expertise to Paris Paralympics
Picture this: The Palace of Versailles as your backdrop. Explosive cheering in the stands. And the shine of gold, silver and bronze medals around the necks of some of the world’s greatest athletes. This is exactly where Dr. Kim Snyder, a 1998 graduate of Auburn University, found herself this past September as the team veterinarian for the 2024 Paris Paralympic Games.

Alumni awards recognize veterinary excellence, Auburn spirit
Calvin Johnson, dean of Auburn University’s College of Veterinary Medicine (CVM), sees recognizing some of the college’s outstanding alumni at its Annual Conference as one of his most important roles. “The J.T. Vaughan Outstanding Equine Service Award, the El Toro Award and the Young Achievers Awards demonstrate the exceptional work our graduates conduct as they represent Auburn so well across the nation in the veterinary profession,” said Johnson. “These alumni have exerted a major impact on animal health and society.”

Dr. Blagburn held a continuous faculty appointment for over 40 years at Auburn University. He began his tenure at Auburn in 1982 and quickly progressed through the faculty ranks. He was ultimately named Distinguished University Professor, and was only the 10th faculty member to receive this title in the history of Auburn University.
